“The Black Mountain Detachment of the Marine Corps League in Henderson, Nevada is pleased to be hosting the 5th Annual Marines’ Memorial Challenge. This year’s event will see a major shift from a traditional 5K Run/Walk to an exciting new "Poker Run" combining navigation skills, physical fitness and the opportunity to win prizes.   Our event will honor Marines and veterans of our brother services with a color guard and traditional Marine Corps cake-cutting ceremony celebrating the 245th birthday of the United States Marine Corps and the 101st celebration of Veterans' Day.  In addition, we will honor the Veterans of past wars including those who perished in the First World War I in 1918.”

BLACK MOUNTAIN DETACHMENT
The Black Mountain Detachment supports many Veterans-related activities.  Our 5K event also helps us to support the Devil Pups Program of Southern Nevada. For several years, young people between the ages of 14-17 have enjoyed the summer experience of a ten-day encampment at the US Marine Corps’ School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton, California where they gain self-confidence and leadership experience through increasingly challenging physical and mental tests.  The program is designed to present challenging physical and motivation challenges prior to the encampment and only the fittest and most highly motivated are allowed to attend.  They join other youth from California, Arizona, and Utah in competing for honors.  Since the implementation of this program, southern Nevada Devil Pups have won numerous scholarships and awards for their performance.  Thirteen Devil Pups from southern Nevada have been selected for admission to America’s service academies. In addition, the Pups participate in community projects, and each Memorial Day, they post and retrieve over 28,000 flags on the graves of Veterans in the state cemetery in Boulder City.  The cost for sending a young person through the program is $780. Because parents are not allowed to contribute to their child’s encampment, the Devil Pups program is entirely funded by Veterans organizations and individual sponsors in the Las Vegas Valley.
